So You Want To Do A Masters In Fashion Design

Fashion design is a very location centric profession and this applies equally to advanced studies in fashion design. This page will look at what aspects need to be considered when seeking to do a masters degree in fashion design.

Fashion design is an applied art relating to clothing and lifestyle accessories and is specific to the cultural and social influences of the time in which it is created. It differs from costume design in that it is distinctly seasonal – as season being autumn/winter or spring/summer – and therefore each created fashion has a relatively short lifespan. Fashion designers can be self employed and design for individual clients or they may create original garments for specialty stores or high-fashion department stores. The majority of fashion designers however will work for clothing manufacturers, creating designs of men’s, women’s and children’s wear for the mass market.

There are a number of fashion degree programs available for anyone who’s interested in pursuing a fashion career. Be your interest in fashion design, fashion merchandising or at the business end of fashion, you will find many degrees that can provide the building blocks of a successful fashion career. An associate or bachelors degree in fashion design will act as a great stepping stone for a number of different careers in fashion. These courses tend to be staffed by industry professionals and they will also often have guest instructors for major fashion design houses.

Fashion design students can expect to complete coursework that will cover: fashion and textile terminology; sewing and tailoring; hand drawing; computer aided design (CAD); consumer trends and behavior; fashion and art history and trends; pattern drafting and manufacturing; fashion show production and promotion; balancing of colors, proportions, textiles and moods; and human anatomy.

As for the actual jobs that fashion design graduates take on, they run the course from designing itself to work at the retail level to managing a fashion house to fashion journalism. However, whilst there may be job diversity in the fashion field you’ll find that nearly all of these jobs are concentrated in the regional fashion centers (which in the U.S. is New York or California) People looking to establish long term careers in the fashion field will need to be prepared to move,

Whilst there are a number of schools in the U.S. that will offer a Bachelors of Fashion Design, it is harder to find schools that offer a Masters in Fashion Design. Graduate programs in Fashion Design tend to focus more closely on the theoretical study of design philosophy, as well as the more technical aspects of sewing and crafting. To pursue a Fashion Design Masters you will most likely have to apply to a school in Europe.
